International Observers and India's Political Future

International Concern over Political Developments in India

Concerns Raised by the United Nations

The United Nations has expressed concern over recent political developments in India, particularly the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the freezing of the Congress party's bank account. UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated that they hope 'everyone's rights are protected in India, including the political and civil rights, and everyone is able to vote in an atmosphere that is free and fair.'

Response from Germany and the United States

Germany:

After initially criticizing Kejriwal's arrest, Germany has moderated its tone. After summoning the Indian diplomat, Germany acknowledged that India has strong democratic values and that it shares these values with India.

United States:

The US, however, has taken a harder stance. Deputy Chief of Mission Gloria Berbella was summoned and the US encouraged 'fair, transparent, and timely legal processes.' The US also questioned the freezing of Congress party accounts, expressing concern about its impact on their ability to campaign.

India's Response

India's Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, Raveesh Jaiswal, responded by stating that it is 'unwarranted to comment' on Kejriwal's arrest and that India is 'proud of our independent and robust democratic institutions.' India has asserted that it will not be influenced by external pressure and that it follows the rule of law.

Kejriwal's Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

Kejriwal's custody was extended by four days on March 31st, 2023. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claims to have evidence that Kejriwal was involved in bribery related to Delhi's liquor policy. However, Kejriwal's statements during questioning have been deemed unsatisfactory by the ED. The ED is now interrogating Aam Aadmi Party's Goa unit chief, Amit Palekar, and may confront him with Kejriwal.

Ashirwad Campaign for Kejriwal

Kejriwal's wife, Sunita Kejriwal, has launched an 'Ashirwad Campaign' to gather messages of support for her husband. These messages will be delivered to Kejriwal in prison.
